Keeping Your Site Up To Date

How often do you update your site? And when I mean update, I don’t mean publishing blog posts. I’m talking about updating WordPress, themes, and plugins.

If you don’t keep you site up to date, you’re asking for trouble. Most updates aren’t updates in functionality. They’re fixing bugs and security issues. Not updating something is the same thing as leaving your front door open and trusting that everyone who walks by will simply ignore it. Highly unlikely.

That’s why it’s incredibly important to run those updates as soon as you become aware of them. Someone will take advantage of every vulnerability and then you’ll be stuck cleaning up the mess. What kind of mess are we talking about? Well, if you don’t have the proper backup system in place and your site gets hacked, say goodbye. You’ll most likely be starting from scratch. And if you do have everything backed up (yay you!), you’re still looking at stress and aggravation as you try to get everything back to the way it was.

Doesn’t it sound so much easier to take just 2 minutes out of your day to keep things up to date? Now obviously keeping your site updated doesn’t mean that your site won’t be hacked, but it will most definitely lessen those chances.

It’s also important to note that you should run a backup before updating anything. It doesn’t happen often, but occasionally an update will break your site, so keep this in mind.
